    June 24th, 2019

What's Going On In the Den - week of June 24th, 2019

    Good Afternoon Clarksdale Families,

Our final week of the year has arrived and we would like to take this time to thank all of our students, parents/families and staff for an outstanding year.  So much great learning both inside and outside the classroom, none of which would be possible without the partnership and teamwork of all of our school community.

    Congratulations to Mrs. Rhodes-Foley

Good News and Bad News for Clarksdale!  We learned this week that Mrs. Rhodes-Foley has been appointed as Principal of Kilbride PS, effective September.  We congratulate Mrs. Rhodes-Foley on this success and thank her for her outstanding contributions to our students, staff and community.  We will certainly miss her next year, and Kilbride is a very lucky school!

We would also like to share that Mr. Johnston will be joining us as Vice Principal in September.  Mr. Johnston joins us from Paul A. Fisher PS and we look forward to welcoming him to our Clarksdale family.

    Staff Comings and Goings

At this time of year, we also must say good-bye to some staff members and welcome some new team members. Sincere thanks to Ms. Dennis, Ms. Eby, Mlle Tisdale and Ms Konopka who will be moving to new schools in the fall.  We also wish Ms. Plas all the best as she begins her maternity leave, as well as Ms Caslin and Ms. Spiers who will both be taking a one-year leave of absence.  We thank Ms. Toal for her music leadership this year and Ms. Khalaf for her support in both grade 2 and grade 4 and 5 FI classes.  We also thank Ms. Dwyer for her support as Educational Assistant and Ms. Chatrath as our Learning Resource Teacher.  Thanks also to Ms. Sills and Ms. Brown, our Child Youth Counsellors who have been reassigned to new schools next year.  Ms. Buonomo is also leaving Clarksdale and we thank her for her wonderful help in the office each day.  Each of your contributions has made a real difference for our students, staff and families and we hope our paths can cross again in the future.

We would like to welcome Mme Brown (FI teacher), Mme Casson (Core French teacher) and Ms. Williams (Child and Youth Counsellor) who will be joining our team in September. Additional staffing announcements will be shared as they are confirmed through the summer.

    June 17, 2019

What's Going On In the Den - week of June 17th 2019

    Good Afternoon Clarksdale Families,

Hope everyone enjoyed a fantastic weekend and a Happy Fathers’ Day to all of our Clarksdale Dads!

Only 2 weeks left in our school year!  Hard to believe we are so close to the end, but still lots happening in the Den.

    Volunteer Tea Tomorrow

A reminder that our volunteer tea is scheduled for tomorrow, Monday, June 17th at 10:30. Please join us in the library for some treats and coffee/tea.  We would love to be able to take this time to thank you for all of your hard work in supporting our staff and students.  We hope to see you there!

    Fun Fair Thank You

A huge thank you to everyone who attended our 33rd annual fun fair last week!  It was a beautiful day and we were so happy to see so many families!

Special thank you to the organizing committee, led by Beth Revelle, and the many staff, student and parent volunteers who worked for months preparing, the day of to set up and afterwards to help with the clean-up and distribution of prizes.  It takes a village to host a fun fair and we are so lucky to have such a committed team who made this possible.

    Staff Appreciation Luncheon thank you

On behalf of all the staff, I wanted to thank all the families who supported the Staff Appreciation Luncheon last week.  We were treated to some wonderful food and time together which was so lovely.  Thank you again to all!

    Outdoor Knitting Club

Knitting club will be taking place the last two weeks under the shade tree outside at 1st NB on Wednesday’s for anyone wanting to join. Bring your own supplies :) Thanks to Ms. Eby for leading this!

    Breakfast Club final week

The Breakfast Club final week is this Friday, 8:45 in the gym.

Every Friday morning this year, our students have been enjoying healthy breakfast options, prepared by our Breakfast club team.  This dedicated team comes every week to prepare and then each Friday to provide this service for our students.  Over 100 students enjoy it each week, and many others enjoy the items as snacks later in the day.  In doing this each week, we are helping to ensure our students start the day on a healthy and positive note, which has also been proven to help their learning.  So a tremendous appreciation to our Breakfast Club Volunteers, led by Kat Thistle, and to Halton Food For Thought for making this possible for our students.

    Track and Field:

Congratulations to all track and field members who participated in last week’s meet. Your hard work paid off and you represented Clarksdale so well. It was also one of the few sunny days, which made the day even more awesome! Special thanks to our coaches for your work over the last month each day to help prepare our team so well.  Great job wolves!  Any members who went home with a jersey, please return it to Ms. Dennis in room 103.

    End of Year Reminders:

Please remember to return all library books.  Also, please ask your child to bring home clothing and other personal items asap, so that they are not loaded down on the last day of school!

    JK Registration:

PLEASE come in to register if you have not already done so.  We have heard that there are young brothers or sisters out there who have not yet done so!  We are building the classes now so please come in asap to register.

A letter from Angela in Grade 4:

Okay, Den newsletter readers, here's a riddle for you: what has a shell, is green,  has many species that are endangered, and adorable?

Answer: A turtle! I'm Angela, a Clarksdale student here to put some suggestions on helping out turtles in the den newsletter.

-Watch out for turtles while you’re driving. Take care not to run over them-it would be an unpleasant experience for both the turtle and any other drivers driving this way

-Littering is very bad. Excluding seagulls, racoons and urban bears, no animal likes garbage. Especially where there's always the possibility that the animal could either consume or choke on the trash the humans have carelessly thrown away.

-Lighthouses are very bad for turtles (namely, sea turtles. You won't see many of them in this area, but I'm just putting this down just in case.) Lighthouses often confuse baby sea turtles when they're trying to crawl to the ocean by following the light of the moon. If you ever decide to own a lighthouse for whatever reason, try to consider the sea turtles during hatching season. Also, never use a flash camera if you're taking pictures of turtle hatchings on vacation.

-There are a lot of endangered turtle species out there. If you ever catch one while fishing, you should immediately release it. Not only is it illegal to keep one, your own health is in mind when I make this suggestion. There's a reason snapping turtles are called snapping.

-This may seem random (because it is), but you know those plastic ring thingies that you sometimes find on pop six-packs? No? Sometimes people either litter those plastic ring things into the ocean. Turtles then choke on them.

So, Den newsletter reader, try to do some of these things (or not do them), and hopefully more turtles will be saved!

  • What is Going on in the Den - June 3 - 7

    Happy June Clarksdale Families!

It is hard to believe we are beginning our final month of the school year!  That said, there is still lots of learning and activities are going on in the Den.

Here is What’s Going On In the Den this week:

A Message from  Me 2 We students:

Children around the world go unheard.  Children everywhere face challenges every day.  Children’s needs are not met. Some children have been taken from their homes to work in factories or to work as soldiers in a war. It is for these reasons and more that Me2We students are participating in the Me 2 We campaign “WE ARE SILENT” on Tuesday June 4th.  The money raised in this campaign will help children in need.  On Monday June 3rd, Me 2 We students will be collecting donations of $2.

What happens to your $2 dollar donation:

-$1 will be donated to Me2We - Free the Children organization: supporting children GLOBALLY and,

    - $1 will be donated to The Halton Learning Foundation: supporting children LOCALLY.

Thank you Clarksdale staff, students and community for helping us make a difference.

Written by the leadership Me 2 We students: Jacob, Jadika and Lili.

    Fun Fair is next week!

Mark your calendars --- our 33rd Fun Fair is just a week away, on Tuesday June 11th!  Please join us for fun, games, bouncy castles, food and fun!  A wonderful way to end the year as a great big Clarksdale Family!  We hope to see you all there:  5:30-8:00.

Final call for volunteers.  We appreciate all those who have signed up.  And we still need more (especially for shift 2 from 7-8:30). Please email Beth Revelle at beth.revelle@gmail.com if you are available to help.

We also will need bake sale donations, which can be brought to school the day of Fun Fair.  Homemade or store bought – either is welcome!

    May 27th, 2019

What's Going On In The Den - week of May 27th

    Good Afternoon Clarksdale Families,

It is hard to believe we are about to begin our final month of the year!

That said, there are still lots of activities and learning going on!

Here is what’s going on in the Den this week

    EQAO

A reminder to parents of students in grade 6 that EQAO is taking place this week, Monday-Wednesday.  Please avoid booking appointments or travel during these times.

Also, to all parents, please note that we cannot make school-wide announcements during the testing or call into classes participating in the testing.

    FDK Information Night

A reminder to all new incoming JK or SK students that our orientation evening is on Wednesday, May 29th from 6:00-7:00pm.  If you have not yet RSVP’d please call the school.

    JK Registration:

Registration for JK continues.  If you have a child who will be entering JK next year, please come to the office to register as soon as possible.  Also, if you have friends or neighbours who have JK-aged children, please remind them to come in now too. This is the time when class numbers are being determined, so it is really important to register in order for us to appropriately staff for these classes.

Bike to School Week – this week!

Clarksdale is participating in Bike To School Week.  Please consider riding to school instead of driving. Biking to school is one way to enjoy the outdoors and be physically active before and after the school day.  All students who “wheel to school” will receive a sticker!    Please remember to wear a helmet and bring a lock to keep your bike safe while at school.

    Fun Fair Update

    Baskets:

Last call for donations for baskets.  Please send items to the office or to your child’s teacher.

    Volunteers welcome!

Volunteers will be receiving their assignments soon.  Thanks so much for all who are giving their time as we couldn't run a successful event without you.  If you did not receive a form and would like to help or sent your form it but do not hear anything in the next week please email Beth Revelle at beth.revelle@gmail.com.  It's never too late to lend a hand!

Thanks for those who are returning your presale forms or ordering via School Cash Online.  Just to clarify, the meal deal consists of a hot dog or 1 slice of pizza or 2 vegetable samosas and also includes a bag of chips and a beverage. The meal deal costs $5.  If you would like to buy ONLY a bag of chips or a drink then those are $1 each on your form.  Instructions for ordering online are on School Cash Online under Fun Fair Presale Order Form and are due by May 31st.

Looking forward to a great time and a successful fundraising event!
