What's Going On In the Den - week of January 14th 2019

Happy New Year Clarksdale Families, Bonne année à tous! We had an excellent return to school.  The students and staff are already busy with their learning and activities around the school.

Here is What’s Going On In the Den:

Mindfulness Minute:

In support of our focus on wellness, each week, we will share a quick tip/activity that you can do with your children to help promote mindfulness.  Enjoy!

Deep Breathing -Take a Big Breath

The more strategies a child has for calming their amygdala the better. Deep breathing teaches children to focus their attention and relax.

What to say:

Taking big breaths can help calm us down and focus.

Stand with your feet apart. Cross one wrist over the other. Slowly breathe in through you nose. Lift your arms so they meet over your head. Let out your breath slowly. Bring your arms down and cross over your wrists again. Repeat at least 10 times.

Continuing in French Immersion Forms Due

A reminder to parents of students in Grades 2-6, to please return the Yellow "Registration for Continuing in French Immersion" forms, ASAP.  These help us in our planning for next year.

Grade 2 French Immersion Registration Forms Due

A reminder that parents of students currently in grade 1 that you must submit a registration form if you are planning to register your child for French Immersion in Grade 2.  These registration forms are due no later than February 1, 2019

Kindergarten Registration is underway

If you have a child who will be 4 by December 2019, then you do need to register them for FDK.  Children already in JK do not need to register again.  Please ensure your child is registered as soon as possible, and no later than February 1st, 2019.  As a reminder, all JK students must register at their home schools.

Junglesport here this week

Junglesport arrives this week.  All students should have received an information letter and permission forms.  Please ensure you return the form by Monday as this will be required in order for your child to participate.

Helmets are provided by Junglesport (and are cleaned in between uses); however, students are also welcome to bring their own helmet if they prefer. Please ensure you know when your child is participating and that they dress comfortably on those days.

Breakfast Club

With Junglesport here this week, Breakfast Club on Friday will be “Grab ‘n Go” vs a sit down.  As a result, students should not come until 9:00 when there will be supervision available.

Winter Weather Reminders:

With the cold weather now back, just a few reminders to ensure your children are properly dressed – boots, hats, jackets, mitts and snow pants.

Also, in the event of snowy weather, please make sure to check the website for information regarding bus cancellations and school closures.

And a driving safety reminder… Roads and parking lots can be slippery in this wintery weather and visibility is more limited.  Please drive and walk with care when picking up and dropping off your children.  We want everyone to be safe!

Chess and Checkers Club:

Chess and Checkers Club starts this week for students in grades 4-6.  All are welcome to come and learn (or teach others!). Students in Grade 4-6 are invited to sign up for Chess and Checkers Club on Monday at first break outside of Room 211. We will be playing once a week in the library. The day of the week that chess is held will depend on the number of students interested in participating. Many thanks to Mrs. DeRoo for helping with this club.

Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books is a competition put on by the Burlington Public Library. Schools that participate send teams of 6 students who compete against other schools. The competitions take place in April. Each team is asked 10 questions about books (New, Classics, Canadian, Award Winners). The students have to identify the Title of the Book and the Author based upon the question asked. Usually each school competes against four other schools.  eg. A boy wizard has to defeat a large snake - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling.  Clarksdale will be entering 2 teams. A Junior Team Grade 3,4,5 and Senior Team Grade 6 (7,8).  Senior Battle starts this Friday at first break.  Thanks to Mr. Hammond and Mrs. Vandervelde for leading these teams.

Lego Robotics

Lego Robotics for grade 6 students has started.  A wonderful chance for students to combine science, technology and teamwork as they design Lego robots to complete specific tasks.  A team will be representing Clarksdale at an upcoming Lego Robotics competition.  Thanks to Mr. Hammond for leading this team as well!

Volleyball Teams:

Volleyball is underway for our grade 6 boys and girls.  Practices are on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  Please remind your child to have proper footwear (and optional knee pads).  We will be returning to practice w/o January 21st, once Junglesport is complete. Mlle Jickels and Mrs. Reesor will be sending further information home regarding game schedules as they are confirmed.
