What's Going On In The Den -- Week of October 15th

Happy Sunday Clarksdale Families,

We hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful weekend with friends and family.

This week brings many activities, as we continue our learning together

Way to go Clarksdale! We have sent 1162 dried out markers from the 2017-2018 school year to Crayola for recycling.

This school year we will be continuing the colour cycle to make sure our markers stay out of the landfill. Go green Clarksdale! Special thanks to Ms. Kozsurek for leading this great initiative!

Civic Election

The grade 4, 5 & 6 students will be taking part in Student Votes this Friday October 19th where they will be able vote for the Mayor, Councillors and School Board Representative. The Grade 5s will act as poll clerks and the students vote using actual votes provided by Elections Ontario. The school results will be announced during the election coverage on TV and Radio Monday night.

There will an assembly this week explaining why the adults are voting next Monday October 22nd and who is running in our ward.

Kids4Kids begins this Thursday after school. Students who are participating will join Scott Graham in the library from 3:35-5:00 for great team building, self-confidence strategies and fun with friends!  Spots are still available.  If you would like to register, please drop by the office and pick up a form.

CCAT Testing for Grade 4s is this week.  All Grade 4 students will be participating in the Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test (CCAT) this week.  Participating classes have received a letter outlining the details, so please take a moment to read further.

Indigo Adopt-A-School a Huge Success

A tremendous thank you to everyone who supported our library with the Indigo adopt-a-school program! Although I won’t have the grand total until the end of the month, I can tell you that it is over $4000!!! We are so excited to go on a shopping spree and I know our students can’t wait to see the brand new books on our shelves!

Also, in a “random act of kindness”, we had a delivery today of over 300 new books.  This individual is not affiliated with Clarksdale, but was in Indigo, saw the need, and proceeded to collect new books from her colleagues and family.  She delivered them today with a note that will be shared with students next week.  What an awesome moment!

Clarksdale Pays It Forward

This week, the Me2We club had its first meeting. Many students showed up and were excited to get started on our month's initiative - We Scare Hunger. More information to follow next week. Grade 4-6 students are welcome to come forward to be Team Leads this year and a form was sent home to fill out if desired. Our next meeting will be Tuesday October 16th! See you there!

Darksdale is coming soon!

Please plan on joining us for our annual Darksdale celebration on Friday, October 26th.  Great family fun and games  --- come on out to Hogwarts and enjoy all the Harry Potter fun!  Watch for details coming this week!  Volunteers always welcome!

Free community presentation “Relationships Matter” by Mary Tabak from @OurKidsNetwork  hosted by CAPP for Kids Tuesday Oct 23rd 7 pm at Gary Allan High School.  Relationships with kids play an important role in academic success, bullying prevention, positive mental health and well-being, youth engagement, social emotional learning and many other risk factors.

The good news is that we can all form strong relationships, but for many of us, it happens by accident. Mary will present, share tips and tell stories about 5 important and easy things you can do to develop more meaningful relationships with your kids today. From babies to teenagers, it is never too early or too late to build relationships.

Interview sign-ups

Many of you signed up for your child’s conference/interview while at the Open House last week.  If you have not yet signed up, please contact your child’s teacher to select a time that works for you.

Breakfast Club Reminder

Breakfast Club continues 8:40 in the gym.  All students are welcome to join us for a healthy breakfast to start their day.  Please remind students to bring a water bottle as we continue to be eco-friendly. Bus students are welcome to partake as “Grab ‘n Go” as they arrive; however, we are having challenges with garbage being left on the blacktop in the mornings.  Please remind your children to help us take care of our school by putting their garbage in the appropriate bins.

Good evening Clarksdale,

This message is for all members of the Cross Country Team

The meet is currently scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, October 4th, at Kelso Conservation Area.

We understand there may be some concerns for weather on Thursday.  We are monitoring everything closely. In the event of a cancellation, we will notify you by 7am Thursday.

Assuming the meet proceeds, students will need to dress appropriately for rainy weather, with umbrellas/rain jackets etc. but also will need to ensure they have running shoes to be able to run the event.  Please also pack extra socks and a change of clothes in order to keep students warm and dry.

Students will need to have a lunch and water bottle with them as we don't return to the school until approximately 2:30pm.

We will be handing out jerseys on the morning of, which will need to be returned to us after the meet when we return to school.

We know you have all worked hard to be ready for tomorrow and we are proud of each of you as you represent Clarksdale.

Special thanks also to your coaches:  Mrs. Parker and Mme Dodgson

Sleep well tonight and see you tomorrow!

Safety Reminder for all Families:  Parents/Guardians are reminded that students are to enter and exit the school with their teachers -  parents are not to enter the school by the rear/side doors.  We ask that you say your goodbyes on the blacktop/kindie gate/kiss ‘n ride.  If your child is late, please come to the office to sign him/her in, and we will gladly ensure they get to their class.  We appreciate your support in ensuring all students are safe.

Just got this exciting message from Indigo:

As of close last night our store has raised $1515! We had one donation of $100 last night, from a parent of an alumni student.
I did notice that there are still free books available at www.adoptaschool.indigo.ca, please let parents know that if they donate 2 books ($20) online, Indigo will donate 1 book ($10). You can achieve 100 free books this way, so far only one has been used!
So, please consider an online donation!

Correction to the Den

Class Re-organizations

As we shared in earlier updates, the Ministry of Education has requirements for class ratios and organizations.  As such, re-organizations of classes are sometimes required after the start of classes, as registrations and numbers are confirmed. At Clarksdale, we did have to re-organize some of our classes and all families involved in these changes have been notified.  The changes will take place starting Tuesday, September 25th.

As a result of the changes, we welcome two new staff members to Clarksdale.  Ms. Dennis is joining us in our 2/3 class and Ms. Eby is returning to Clarksdale as a planning and coverage teacher.

What's Going on in the Den - September 10-14

posted Sep 7, 2018, 11:15 AM by Neil Hammond

Hello Clarksdale Families,

Welcome to our second “What’s Going On In the Den”, our weekly update on all the activities and information from Clarksdale.

You will notice a change in timing --- for this year, we will be sending out our WGOITD on Friday afternoons, so that you can plan for the week ahead.

We had a very successful first week!  Staff and students are settling in to our new year of learning and shared happy adventures from their summers. We heard many positive comments about the improvements in and around the school, particularly our beautiful garden and our new parking lot/Kindie area!

Things are not quite complete and we appreciate your patience as we finish up our work in these areas.

A quick reminder that the creative playground is closed in the mornings before school and that car pick-up and drop-offs should be from the west parking lot only.

Clubs and Teams are beginning, the library is set to open after a summer of major construction, and the school is buzzing with excitement about the year ahead.  Our Terry Fox Event will take place on September 28th and we invite you to start collecting your “Toonies for Terry”.

We are very excited to announce that our school has been “adopted” by the Brant Street Indigo! From September 15 to October 7, this store is going to fundraise on our behalf.  There are also several ways we can raise funds to support our library online which you can find at adoptaschool.indigo.ca. More information will be coming out via Synermessages.  We arelooking forward to seeing what our amazing community can raise!

Please review the invitation to join our School Council sent home this week.  All members of the Clarksdale community are welcome to attend council meetings.  If you would like to be a voting member of Council, watch for the nomination form being sent home this week.  If necessary, an election will be held. Our first council meeting will be held on Monday, October 1st, at 7:00pm.

As a reminder (from the letter shared on the first day), the Ministry does have requirements for class ratios and organizations.  As such, re-organizations of classes are sometimes required after the start of classes, as registrations and numbers are confirmed.  If this is required at Clarksdale, it will take place over the next couple of weeks and may involve class switches for students and staff.  We understand this can be a difficult time for students, families and staff and will do everything we can to ensure it is as smooth as possible.  We appreciate your understanding.

Here is What’s Going On In the Den this week:

Monday:    Happy Rosh Hashana

Please return information forms to office asap

-----------------------------------------------

 Thursday:  First Pizza Day

Looking Ahead:

Monday, September 10th:  Staff Meeting 4:00pm

Monday, September 17th:  PA Day – No school for students

Thursday, September 20th:  First Pita Day

Thursday, September 27th:  Pizza Day

Friday, September 28th:  Toonie for Terry/Terry Fox Run

What is going on in the Den September 4th

posted Sep 2, 2018, 7:30 PM by Neil Hammond

Welcome Back Clarksdale Families and a Warm Welcome to all our New Families joining us for the first time.

For those who are new, “What’s Going On In the Den” is a weekly update sent to families to keep you informed on what is happening in and around Clarksdale.

Please make sure that you configure your email to ensure these messages are received and not put in your “junk” folder!

Please follow us on Twitter @ClarksdaleHDSB as we also post important information there

A few important messages for our first day:

Class lists have been posted on the school front doors and on our website.  Please ensure you have checked the lists to know who your child’s teacher is.  You will need your OEN number (which is your child’s student number, listed on your report card).

Students in grades 1-6 should meet their teacher on the rear blacktop.  Supervision will begin at 9:00 am Tuesday.  Teachers will be outside with signs and Class lists to help students find them.  The entry bell rings at 9:15 and we will make our way in to begin our first day together shortly after.

SK students are asked to meet their teachers on the kindie blacktop between 9:00 and 9:15.  JK and new SK students are asked to come at 9:30am in order to allow the returning students to get organized and settled.  It will help our little ones settle more easily into their big day!  Each kindergarten student should have received an email confirming your teacher.  If you did not receive it, please don’t worry.  We will have lists at the kindie area to help you.

Our school schedule is as follows:

9:15am entry

10:55-11:35:  first nutrition break

1:15-1:55:  second nutrition break

3:35 dismissal

Please ensure your child knows how he/she is getting home at the end of the day.  Bussed students will be escorted to the bus lines to ensure they get on the right bus.

**If you are picking up your child by car, please note that the Kiss ‘n Ride area (for drop-off and pick up)  is only on the West side parking lot.  The east Parking Lot is reserved for staff and is not designed to safely accommodate pick-ups.

If the west lot is full, please consider parking on a side street and walking your child to the school  --- or better yet, leave the car at home and walk the whole way!!

Please look for important information being sent home on the first day.  Lots of forms to fill out, so please take the time to do so as soon as possible.

We look forward to a wonderful day and a year full of learning, growth and success!

Happy First Day, Clarksdale!
