What's Going On In the Den - week of June 24th, 2019

Good Afternoon Clarksdale Families,

Our final week of the year has arrived and we would like to take this time to thank all of our students, parents/families and staff for an outstanding year.  So much great learning both inside and outside the classroom, none of which would be possible without the partnership and teamwork of all of our school community.

Congratulations to Mrs. Rhodes-Foley

Good News and Bad News for Clarksdale!  We learned this week that Mrs. Rhodes-Foley has been appointed as Principal of Kilbride PS, effective September.  We congratulate Mrs. Rhodes-Foley on this success and thank her for her outstanding contributions to our students, staff and community.  We will certainly miss her next year, and Kilbride is a very lucky school!

We would also like to share that Mr. Johnston will be joining us as Vice Principal in September.  Mr. Johnston joins us from Paul A. Fisher PS and we look forward to welcoming him to our Clarksdale family.

Staff Comings and Goings

At this time of year, we also must say good-bye to some staff members and welcome some new team members. Sincere thanks to Ms. Dennis, Ms. Eby, Mlle Tisdale and Ms Konopka who will be moving to new schools in the fall.  We also wish Ms. Plas all the best as she begins her maternity leave, as well as Ms Caslin and Ms. Spiers who will both be taking a one-year leave of absence.  We thank Ms. Toal for her music leadership this year and Ms. Khalaf for her support in both grade 2 and grade 4 and 5 FI classes.  We also thank Ms. Dwyer for her support as Educational Assistant and Ms. Chatrath as our Learning Resource Teacher.  Thanks also to Ms. Sills and Ms. Brown, our Child Youth Counsellors who have been reassigned to new schools next year.  Ms. Buonomo is also leaving Clarksdale and we thank her for her wonderful help in the office each day.  Each of your contributions has made a real difference for our students, staff and families and we hope our paths can cross again in the future.

We would like to welcome Mme Brown (FI teacher), Mme Casson (Core French teacher) and Ms. Williams (Child and Youth Counsellor) who will be joining our team in September. Additional staffing announcements will be shared as they are confirmed through the summer.

What's Going On In the Den - week of June 17th 2019

Good Afternoon Clarksdale Families,

Hope everyone enjoyed a fantastic weekend and a Happy Fathers’ Day to all of our Clarksdale Dads!

Only 2 weeks left in our school year!  Hard to believe we are so close to the end, but still lots happening in the Den.

Volunteer Tea Tomorrow

A reminder that our volunteer tea is scheduled for tomorrow, Monday, June 17th at 10:30. Please join us in the library for some treats and coffee/tea.  We would love to be able to take this time to thank you for all of your hard work in supporting our staff and students.  We hope to see you there!

Fun Fair Thank You

A huge thank you to everyone who attended our 33rd annual fun fair last week!  It was a beautiful day and we were so happy to see so many families!

Special thank you to the organizing committee, led by Beth Revelle, and the many staff, student and parent volunteers who worked for months preparing, the day of to set up and afterwards to help with the clean-up and distribution of prizes.  It takes a village to host a fun fair and we are so lucky to have such a committed team who made this possible.

Staff Appreciation Luncheon thank you

On behalf of all the staff, I wanted to thank all the families who supported the Staff Appreciation Luncheon last week.  We were treated to some wonderful food and time together which was so lovely.  Thank you again to all!

Outdoor Knitting Club

Knitting club will be taking place the last two weeks under the shade tree outside at 1st NB on Wednesday’s for anyone wanting to join. Bring your own supplies :) Thanks to Ms. Eby for leading this!

Breakfast Club final week

The Breakfast Club final week is this Friday, 8:45 in the gym.

Every Friday morning this year, our students have been enjoying healthy breakfast options, prepared by our Breakfast club team.  This dedicated team comes every week to prepare and then each Friday to provide this service for our students.  Over 100 students enjoy it each week, and many others enjoy the items as snacks later in the day.  In doing this each week, we are helping to ensure our students start the day on a healthy and positive note, which has also been proven to help their learning.  So a tremendous appreciation to our Breakfast Club Volunteers, led by Kat Thistle, and to Halton Food For Thought for making this possible for our students.

Track and Field:

Congratulations to all track and field members who participated in last week’s meet. Your hard work paid off and you represented Clarksdale so well. It was also one of the few sunny days, which made the day even more awesome! Special thanks to our coaches for your work over the last month each day to help prepare our team so well.  Great job wolves!  Any members who went home with a jersey, please return it to Ms. Dennis in room 103.

End of Year Reminders:

Please remember to return all library books.  Also, please ask your child to bring home clothing and other personal items asap, so that they are not loaded down on the last day of school!

JK Registration:

PLEASE come in to register if you have not already done so.  We have heard that there are young brothers or sisters out there who have not yet done so!  We are building the classes now so please come in asap to register.

A letter from Angela in Grade 4:

Okay, Den newsletter readers, here's a riddle for you: what has a shell, is green,  has many species that are endangered, and adorable?

Answer: A turtle! I'm Angela, a Clarksdale student here to put some suggestions on helping out turtles in the den newsletter.

-Watch out for turtles while you’re driving. Take care not to run over them-it would be an unpleasant experience for both the turtle and any other drivers driving this way

-Littering is very bad. Excluding seagulls, racoons and urban bears, no animal likes garbage. Especially where there's always the possibility that the animal could either consume or choke on the trash the humans have carelessly thrown away.

-Lighthouses are very bad for turtles (namely, sea turtles. You won't see many of them in this area, but I'm just putting this down just in case.) Lighthouses often confuse baby sea turtles when they're trying to crawl to the ocean by following the light of the moon. If you ever decide to own a lighthouse for whatever reason, try to consider the sea turtles during hatching season. Also, never use a flash camera if you're taking pictures of turtle hatchings on vacation.

-There are a lot of endangered turtle species out there. If you ever catch one while fishing, you should immediately release it. Not only is it illegal to keep one, your own health is in mind when I make this suggestion. There's a reason snapping turtles are called snapping.

-This may seem random (because it is), but you know those plastic ring thingies that you sometimes find on pop six-packs? No? Sometimes people either litter those plastic ring things into the ocean. Turtles then choke on them.

So, Den newsletter reader, try to do some of these things (or not do them), and hopefully more turtles will be saved!

A Message from  Me 2 We students:

Children around the world go unheard.  Children everywhere face challenges every day.  Children’s needs are not met. Some children have been taken from their homes to work in factories or to work as soldiers in a war. It is for these reasons and more that Me2We students are participating in the Me 2 We campaign “WE ARE SILENT” on Tuesday June 4th.  The money raised in this campaign will help children in need.  On Monday June 3rd, Me 2 We students will be collecting donations of $2.

What happens to your $2 dollar donation:

-$1 will be donated to Me2We - Free the Children organization: supporting children GLOBALLY and,

- $1 will be donated to The Halton Learning Foundation: supporting children LOCALLY.

Thank you Clarksdale staff, students and community for helping us make a difference.

Written by the leadership Me 2 We students: Jacob, Jadika and Lili.

Final call for volunteers.  We appreciate all those who have signed up.  And we still need more (especially for shift 2 from 7-8:30). Please email Beth Revelle at beth.revelle@gmail.com if you are available to help.

We also will need bake sale donations, which can be brought to school the day of Fun Fair.  Homemade or store bought – either is welcome!

What's Going On In the Den - week of May 20th

Happy Victoria Day Clarksdale Families!

We hope you had a wonderful long weekend and that you enjoyed time with friends and family.

Here is What’s Going On In the Den this week:

A reminder for EQAO

Grade 3 students begin  EQAO on Wednesday.  Our grade 6 students will be writing next week.

Please note that we will not be able to call into classes during the testing, so please avoid scheduling any appointments or absences during these days.  Announcements will also take place later after second nutrition break during the testing weeks.

Also a reminder that clubs who normally use the library will be cancelled as the library will be in use for testing.

Jump Rope For Heart a big success!

Many thanks to all families for your support of our annual Jump Rope for Heart.  It was a beautiful afternoon, and the students enjoyed a fitness filled circuit of activities, with the added bonus of supporting an important cause.  Special thanks to Mrs. Whale who organized it and had it all run so smoothly!

Final Movie Night

Our final movie night will be on May 24th.  The movie will be “How to Train Your Dragon – Hidden World”.  Doors open at 6:30 and admission is $1.00.  A reminder that all students must be accompanied by an adult.  Hope to see you all there!

Fun Fair News:

Our Fun Fair is just a few weeks away!  June 11th is the date!

A fun fair package is coming home that will include our first newsletter, presale order forms and information on voluntary baked good donations for the day of fun fair.  Please take a minute to read through this valuable information.  Presale forms are very important since it allows volunteers to estimate how much food and supplies are needed and helps you to avoid line ups during the event!

Next fun fair meeting: May 23rd at 7:15 in the staff room

Volunteer forms and penny sale donations are making their way in which is great. Keep them coming!

Don't forget that there is chance to win a family fun pack for those who hand in their volunteer and/or presale forms. 2 ways to win! Winners will be shared in our next newsletter.

Me2We’s Next Campaign: WE are Silent

Starting tomorrow, Tuesday May 21st, students in Me2We will be presenting information to all classrooms about our next campaign, WE are Silent. By taking a vow of silence in solidarity with those who go unheard, Clarksdale can prove just how big of a difference we can make. On Monday June 3rd Me2We students will be collecting donations of $2: $1 wIll go towards the WE Villages Education Pillar of Impact and the other $1 will go to the Halton Learning Foundation.  Then on Tuesday June 4th classes will make a pledge to be silent for a part of the school day.  Stay tuned for more information.

Kindergarten Information Night:

Do you have a child who will be starting JK next year or is new to SK?

If so, please join us for our Kindergarten Information night on Wednesday, May 29th, from 6:00-7:00pm.  You and your child will visit each classroom, will hear about Kindergarten “life” and will have a chance to meet our fabulous teachers.  Guests will also be joining us from Halton Health, our bus companies, the Burlington Public Library and members of our school council will be there to share information about their important work.  We hope you can join us!

What's Going On In The Den - week of May 6th

Good Afternoon Clarksdale! April showers finally brought May warmth and flowers!  Let's hope it continues!

Mental Health Awareness Week

This week across Canada is Mental Health Awareness Week.  Every day this week we will be sharing announcements in the morning to raise awareness about Mental Health.

One in five Canadians lives with mental health problems, mental illnesses or addiction. But all of us have mental health, just like we all have physical health. Our focus this year will be on reinforcing our wellbeing and promoting overall wellness with our students and staff.

Fun Fair News:

As part of our fun fair, classes are invited to gather items to create baskets that are then part of our penny sale.  Each class will be choosing a theme and will be sharing that theme with you.  Families are then invited to send in new/unused items to help fill the class basket.

Our next planning meeting is Thursday, May 9th at 7:15 pm in the staff room.  See you there!

As part of our spirit days, please plan to wear red/white or pink!

FDK Orientation:

Do you have a child who will be attending JK with us next year?  Or a child who will be new to SK?  If so, please plan to join us with your child for our FDK orientation evening on Wednesday May 29th, from 6-7pm.  Come to see your FDK classroom, meet the current FDK staff and share in some activities with your child.  Representatives from our School Council, the YMCA before/after school program, Halton bussing and Burlington Library will also be with us to answer any questions you may have. Please rsvp to the office.  A flyer will also be sent home to confirm details.

Our grade 6s will also be having a group photo taken on Tuesday.

Healthy Schools

We would like to send a big thank you to the Clarksdale Health Action Team- our grade 6 team includes Camryn, Shayla, Lili, Zaina, Jovin & Ethan H.  They presented a terrific assembly to the school this week on Health & Growth Mindset.

With their help we are working hard to strive for a third year as a GOLD certified healthy school in Ontario. The team reminded everyone of the 6 domains of health: Physical, Cognitive,  Social, Emotional, Spiritual, & Healthy Eating. Also they reminded us that with a growth mindset we can persevere through challenges and develop resilience as we grow and change!

Special thanks to Mrs. Parker, Mrs. Rhodes-Foley and our awesome Halton Health Nurse Mrs. Soper-Manning for their leadership of this awesome team!

What's Going On In the Den - week of April 22nd 2019

Good Afternoon Clarksdale!

Spring has finally sprung and we hope you are staying dry with all these April showers!  Happy Earth Day this week as well!

Halton Music Showcase Festival

Our Junior Showcase Choir performed lastTuesday at FirstOntario Concert Hall in Hamilton.  Our choir, consisting of 62 students from grade 4-6, joined 12 other schools from Burlington and Oakville in an amazing display of musical talent. You just can’t beat the sound of 300 young children all singing together!  Many thanks to all the parents who attended and special thanks to Mrs. Toal for her leadership in making this possible for our students.  And of course, congratulations to our students for their hard work in attending many practices -- and a late night on Tuesday!

Class Placement Requests:

Believe it or not, we are already beginning our planning for next year. One component of our planning involves student class placements.  Our teachers do an outstanding job of this and really consider the needs of students both academically and socially in their decisions regarding student placements.  Should you have a specific request regarding your child's placement, these are due in the office by the end of April. Requests must be made in writing and must be sent to Mrs. Reesor, not your child's classroom teacher.  Also, a reminder that requests for specific teachers will not be accepted and the final decision regarding a student's class placement remains with the school.

Here’s what’s going on in the Den this week.

Growth Mindset Assembly

Our CHAT team (Clarksdale Healthy Action Team) has been working hard and will be hosting an assembly on Thursday at 10:15 am.  We look forward to seeing their leadership in action!

Our Next Spirit Day – Backwards Day on Friday

A reminder that Backwards Day is this Thursday.  Wear your clothes the wrong way around, be creative in how you shake up your look to be backwards!! Thanks to our spirit leaders in organizing this day.

Earth Day:  Green Up Clean Up Day this week

Clarksdale's annual Clean Up Green Up will be this Friday, April 26. Please send garden gloves with your child if you can. Go green Clarksdale!

Fun Fair News:

Fun fair is fast approaching!  The committee has a few requests:

1) We are looking for donations for our silent auction and penny sale.  If you own your own business or know someone who does please consider donating an item to our Fun Fair.  You can bring the item into the office or email Beth Revelle at clarksdalefunfair@gmail.com and we can arrange pick up of the item(s) and can also get you a copy of the official donation request letter.

2) Volunteer forms will be coming home in the near future.  We always need lots of help with set up, taking a shift during fun fair and clean up.

Thanks for your assistance in making our event a big success each year!!  Our next planning meeting is May 9th at 7:15pm.  Hope to see you there!

Movie Night on Friday!

Our next movie night is this coming Friday.  We are showing Mary Poppins Returns.  A reminder that doors open at 6:30pm and the movie starts at 7:00.  Food and Drinks available and admission is still just $1!  Students must be accompanied by an adult and we hope to see you all there!
