What's Going On In The Den - week of January 20th, 2020

Happy Sunday Clarksdale Families,

Winter has definitely returned and we hope all are safe after yesterday’s storm.

Here is What’s Going On In the Den:

New Sanctions:  Important Notes

Unfortunately, due to the new sanctions, the following activities are affected:

**As of now, elementary schools (including Clarksdale) will be closed for a one-day strike on THURSDAY, January 23rd.  Please ensure to check the HDSB website for any updates and ensure that alternate care arrangements are made if necessary.

Please note that we will advise of next steps regarding the pita day, currently scheduled for Thursday.

As a reminder:

**Movie Night Cancelled

**Field Trips Cancelled: any field trips that were scheduled between now and February 14thare cancelled.  Decisions regarding field trips after that date will be determined as we get closer to the date

** Extra-curriculars that take place during the day will currently continue.  This includes choir, the musical, lego robotics, clubs and teams.  After-school activities are cancelled.

The following are not affected:

** Social Media presentation on January 22nd will continue as planned

** Scott Graham Kids4Kids Program will continue as planned.

Good News and Bad News on the Gym

The bad news is that the company has encountered some issues with the paint for our logo – it is not adhering to the floor.  They are coming in tomorrow to assess the situation.  The good news is that we will be re-opening the gym (minus the logo) on Tuesday so students can once again use it for phys ed and YMCA programs etc.

Driving Safety Reminders:

Roads and parking lots can be slippery in this wintery weather and visibility is more limited.  We want to remind everyone to please drive and walk with care when picking up and dropping off your children.  We want everyone to be safe!

We also remind parents who are in the kiss ‘n ride area that this area is intended for quick pick-ups and drop-offs and parents should not be idling or parking in this area.  It is also used by our daycare buses as well, so we ask that you move to make room for these when they arrive.  If your child is not out yet, please park and wait for your child in one of the parking spaces.

Thank you from our Spirit Leaders

The Spirit Leaders would like to say thank you for the donations during Mustache Day and Pajama Day! We raised $67.25 for the Canadian Cancer Society!

Our next two spirit days we will be supporting the Halton Learning Foundation. Stay tuned for our January Spirit Day!

Reminder: Digital Intelligence Presentations: Wed. Jan. 22

posted Dec 15, 2019, 9:59 AM by Neil Hammond

Happy December Clarksdale Families,

Our last “Den” for 2019 and still lots happening!

We want to wish all of our families a wonderful, safe and happy holiday season!  See you again on January 6th.

So Many Thanks

A huge thanks to staff, students and parents for their support of our holiday craft evening and book fair.  Both were huge successes and we appreciate your participation.  Hope you all enjoyed them as well!  The Book Fair was also a big success with sales exceeding $6300, which will earn us $3700 in books for the library!

Special thanks again to Ms. Gibbs for taking the lead on the evening and to Ms. Vandervelde for her leadership of the bookfair.  Thank you also to our parent and family volunteers who helped with the fair and to our awesome library technician, Ms. Mills for running it on Tuesday and Thursday!

Angel Tree

Also many thanks to those who have supported our hat and mitten tree, and our angel tree.  Tomorrow (Monday) is the last day for donations as we will be busy organizing and sharing the amazing gifts that we have received with those in need. Thank you again for helping to make someone’s holiday season a little brighter.

Bussing and pick-up reminders

If your child is changing his/her routine for after school, please let the school and teachers know.  This helps us to avoid making calls and trying to locate students who usually take the bus.  Thank you for helping to keep all our children safe.

Wednesday, OSSTF day of strike

Please note that this coming Wednesday, there is another planned one-day strike with OSSTF workers.  While our school will be open, our secretaries will not be at work, nor will our Child Youth Worker.

We thank you in advance for your support with calling in absences to the absence line, ensuring your child is on time and for your patience with us as we answer the phone and door.

PJ Day Thursday

Thursday December 19th is our next school-wide spirit day, Pajama Day!  The children and staff are encouraged to wear their cozy pajamas to school to show their Clarksdale Spirit. Also, if you wish to make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society, please send your child to school with a loonie.

Early Dismissal on Friday

A reminder to all families that it will be early dismissal on Friday.  This means that school will end 90 minutes early --- at 2:05.  Bus times will also be adjusted by 90 minutes, so please ensure your pick-up times are adjusted as well.

Nutrition Break #1:  10:25-11:05

Nutrition Break #2: 12:15-12:55

Kidssentials

Term 2 ordering will be available shortly after we return from the winter break.  There is still time to order for the January 9th lunch date.  You can place your order up to two days before any Kidssentials lunch day.  To order go to https://kidssentials.com/

Gym Floor Replacement

We are very excited to share that our gym floor is being replaced over the holidays with a brand new spring floor, complete with our Clarksdale Wolves logo!  In order to accommodate this renovation, the gym will be closed on December 16th and 17th, and then from December 23rd – January 11th.  This will mean the after school YMCA program will be relocated to classrooms and gym classes will be held outside for that week. Also our breakfast club will be cancelled for the first week back. We thank everyone for their flexibility as we get ready to enjoy a great new floor!

What is Going On In The Den - Dec 2-6

posted Dec 1, 2019, 10:08 AM by Neil Hammond

December 2nd 2019

What's Going On In The Den - week of December

Happy Sunday Clarksdale Families,

A very busy December ahead!

Sanctions Update

As you may have seen from the Board’s communication, we are currently facing the possibility of a one-day withdrawal of service by members of the OSSTF on Wednesday. While elementary schools will remain open, please be aware that school office staff (e.g. school secretaries, technical staff in school libraries) and student services staff (e.g. Psychologists, Social Workers, Child & Youth Counsellors, Speech-Language Pathologists, Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) Facilitators) in elementary and secondary schools are members of OSSTF and will therefore also be on strike. As a result, parents/guardians can expect disruption to normal school activities.

Without office staff in elementary schools, parents/guardians are reminded of the following:

  • If your child will be absent or late, you must report the absence/late arrival through SchoolMessenger (Toll-free at 1-877-409-6310, online at go.schoolmessenger.ca or on the HDSB Mobile App).
  • School phones may not be answered in a timely manner.
  • Exterior doors of schools will be locked. If your child is arriving late, you must wait at the door with them until it is opened by a staff member. Please expect delays.
  • We encourage parents/guardians to avoid non-urgent school visits/communication on this day.

Holiday Multicultural Craft Night is Coming:

A reminder of our holiday craft night and sing-a-long on Wednesday December 11th, from 6:00-7:30pm.  Please make sure you have returned your registration form so that we can plan the right number of crafts and snacks.  Hope to see you all there!

Angel Tree and Hat/Mitten Tree:

Thank you to those who have already participated in the hat/mitten tree and the angel tree.  We still have lots of cards available. Please consider donating a pair of mittens, hat or scarf to our mitten tree, located in the library.  Or come to the office and select a card from our angel tree.  Then, simply purchase a gift, suitable for a child of that age, wrap it and place it with the card (and description of gift) attached back under the tree. New toys, Lego, craft items, clothing, books (from our book fair!) etc. are all great suggestions. Gift cards are also welcome (e.g. grocery stores, Chapters, Walmart, Canadian Tire, Toys R Us).  We thank you in advance for your kind support of this important event. The last day for donations is Friday, December 13th.

Book Fair Coming Soon!

Please support the Clarksdale Library by coming out to our December Book Fair!  We will have a wide selection of books that will appeal to readers at every level.  Picture books, easy readers, chapter books, junior novels and other popular must-read titles are feature online.  Flyers are on their way home. The students will be previewing the fair this Friday the 6th and Monday the 9th. The fair will be open for sales Monday evening until 5pm, Tuesday until 5pm, Wednesday until 8pm during our craft night and Thursday until 3pm. Come on out and support Clarksdale’s library!

Also, our library collection has recently been weeded due to the age of the books and would really appreciate any donations of new books!  Please consider buying an extra book at the fair to donate to our school collection and help refresh our library!

Bus Reminders

Please make sure you inform the school on days your child is not going home on the bus (i.e., getting a drive home; going to childcare or after-school activities; going home with another student; being signed out early).  Thank you!

What is Going On In The Den - Nov 25 - 29

posted Nov 24, 2019, 2:59 PM by Neil Hammond

November 25th, 2019

What's Going On In The Den - week of November 25th

Happy Sunday Clarksdale Families,

It is hard to believe we are almost into December!  And another busy week to come in the Den!

Lots of Ways to share kindness at Clarksdale!

We appreciate all of the opportunities for students and families to Pay It Forward --- we recognize that supporting each one can be difficult--- so please know we are sharing these as options to consider, but there is of course no requirement for students to do all of these!

1)  Mustache Day November 29th!

For this month's Spirit Day, Mustache Day, the Spirit Leaders will be accepting donations for the Cancer Society and students are invited to wear their craziest mustaches on Friday.

2) Angel Tree and Hat/Mitten Tree:

We invite all families to participate in our fourth annual angel tree and hat/mitten tree collections.  Many families within our community need help over the holiday season and throughout the year and this is a wonderful way to do so.  Please consider donating a pair of mittens, hat or scarf to our mitten tree, located in the library.  Or come to the office and select a card from our angel tree.  Then, simply purchase a gift, suitable for a child of that age, wrap it and place it with the card attached (including a description of what is in the package) back under the tree. New toys, Lego, craft items, clothing, books etc. are all great suggestions. Gift cards are also welcome (e.g. grocery stores, Chapters, Walmart, Canadian Tire, Toys R Us).  We thank you in advance for your kind support of this important event.  We know that last year, we were able to support close to 25 families – and their appreciation was tremendous.

Movie Night

This Friday November 29th will be our second movie night of the school year. Doors open at 6:30pm and the movie starts at 7:00pm. The movie is Angry Birds 2 and is sure to be fun to watch!  Food and refreshments will be available to purchase.  A reminder that all students must be accompanied by an adult.  Admission is $1 per person.

Pets on School Property

We are so happy to see so many families walking to school, instead of driving! Thank you for helping to keep our parking lot traffic to a minimum. We know that many of you have special 4-legged members of your family that often come for the walk to school. Many of our students love dogs; however, we do have some students who are fearful of pets or have allergies to pets. For this reason, we do ask that you please keep your dog on leash at all times.  We also ask that you avoid walking through the kindergarten area with dogs and remain at the edge of the blacktop.

Thank you for helping our children feel safe!

What's Going On In The Den - week of November 18th, 2019

Happy Sunday Clarksdale Families,

Many thanks to the parents/family members who joined us for our X-Dance Family Dance Night on Wednesday.  Another great family evening, where we enjoyed a variety of dances from around the world, mixed with fun and fitness. See our pictures on Twitter - @ClarksdaleHDSB.

A busy week to come in the Den.

This week is Bullying Prevention Awareness Week throughout Halton.

At Clarksdale, we continue (as we do each week!) with the promotion of Kindness, Inclusion and Positive Problem Solving in order to help our students feel safe and happy at school – and to feel they belong.  On Wednesday, our students will be leading an assembly to promote our common language in problem solving.  A great example of Students Leading Students, and Student Voice in Action.

Clarksdale’s Angel Tree and Hat/Mitten Tree Begins this week

Clarksdale is a very generous school community and we are so appreciative of the kindness we share.  We have many families in need within our community and each year, we invite all staff, students and parents to take part in our Angel Tree and Holiday Hat/mitten tree.  Bring in a pair of mittens, a hat or scarf and hang them on the mitten tree, located in the library.

Our Angel Tree will be located in the office.  The tree contains paper ornaments that indicate a child (e.g., boy 8, girl 9), mom/dad/guardian.  Come on in, take a card and purchase a gift suitable for the person on the ornament.  Important Reminder:  please wrap the gift and bring it to the school with the ornament card taped to it including a description of the gift inside.  Our Clarksdale elves will then assemble the gifts and distribute them to our families before the holiday season begins.

We also welcome gift cards.  Popular spots include grocery stores, gas stations, Walmart, Chapters/Indigo, The Bay, Canadian Tire.

We always appreciate donations of tape, wrapping paper, cards and bows for any last minute items needed.

We look forward to sharing the kindness of the season with all of our Clarksdale families.  All donations are due in the office by Friday December 6th

Progress Reports Home this week and Student/Teacher/Parent Conferences this week

Parents are reminded that progress reports are being sent home on Monday and that their student/parent/teacher conference will be held this week.  Please note that students are expected to accompany you to these meetings, unless otherwise arranged with your child’s teacher. Progress reports will be sent home on Monday, so please take a moment to review these with your child prior to your conference.

**Don’t forget to stop by the office to pick up an Angel Tree card during your visit.

**Please check the lost and found table for any missing items.

Congratulations to our Caribou Math Contest Participants:

3 of our students participated in the annual Caribou Math contest, with participants from all around the world.  Congratulations to Jack who placed in the top 40% amongst grade 3/4 students, to Valeria, who placed in the top 15% amongst grade 3/4 and to Evan who finished in the top 2% for grade 5/6.  These are world rankings and we are so proud of your accomplishments!

What's Going On In The Den - week of November 4th

Happy Sunday Clarksdale Families,

We are already into November and our children are busy and active in their learning both inside and outside the classroom.

Here is What’s Happening in the Den this Week:

Our November newsletter was sent home last week, so please take a look for it either in your child’s backpack or online.

Appreciation:

Many thanks to our friends at Faith Church, who joined me at Clarksdale last Sunday to prepare all of our gardens for the winter. In spite of the rain, these wonderful volunteers did a great job of trimming, weeding and mulching ~ and have also volunteered to return in the spring to help us get the gardens ready for summer.  A lovely example of community members helping each other and we appreciate their support.

Treaties Recognition Week: November 4-8

In 2016, the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs declared the first week of November of every year as Treaties Recognition Week to honour treaties, help Ontarians learn about their significance and understand our collective responsibilities as treaty people.  Learning about treaties and the histories, perspectives and contributions of First Nation, Métis and Inuit peoples is an important part of the learning experience for all Ontario students. Throughout this week, our students will be sharing in the learning about the treaties and their significance to our history and future.

Lockdown Practice – November 7th

Each year, as part of our Safety Plan, all elementary schools conduct two lockdown practices.  These planned practices are important in ensuring that staff and students are aware of how to appropriately respond in the event of a real emergency.  Our first lockdown practice will take place on Wednesday, November 7th at approximately 11:45 a.m.  Our Community Police Officer, Constable M. Repta, will be joining us.   The practice will last approximately 15 minutes; however, it is important to note that during this time, access to the school will not be permitted.  Please plan ahead for this as it may affect pick-ups for appointments etc.

Please refer to the separate message sent by Mr. Johnston for more details.

Final Days for We Scare Hunger

Final two days for collecting non-perishable food items.  Please send all donations in by Tuesday, November 6th.  Many thanks for your generous support.

Photo Retake Day Tuesday

If you would like a retake or if your child was absent on our first photo day, please send a note to your child’s teacher and we will ensure that it gets taken.

Remembrance Day Ceremony November 11th

We invite all students to join us in wearing red to honour our veterans for our Remembrance Day Ceremony next Monday at 10:15.  Parents are also welcome to join us as we acknowledge the contributions of our many veterans and current members of our military.

X-Dance coming to Clarksdale week of November 12-15 and Families are invited to join us too!

X-Dance offers a variety of dance style from all around the world.  The focus of this experience is to celebrate diversity while providing the platform to build inclusion.  Students will explore a variety of dance styles over their 3 X-Dance Sessions.

Families are also be invited to share in the learning, fitness and fun on Wednesday, November 13th , starting at 6:30pm. A flyer was sent home this week, so please make sure you RSVP either on the form or to reesorj@hdsb.ca so we have a sense of numbers.

Progress Reports Coming home soon -Conference sign-ups

Progress Reports are coming home on November 18th and conferences will be held that week. If you have not yet signed up, please contact your child’s teacher to select a time that works for you.  A reminder notice of your date and time will be sent home soon.

Pick Up and Drop-off Reminders

We want to remind parents/guardians that when coming to the school, all adults must sign in at the office.  On rainy days, when students enter the school directly, we ask that parents say your good-byes on the blacktop.

Please do not walk your child to his/her classroom.  This helps reduce congestion in the hallways and safety concerns for our staff and students.

We ask the same at the end of the day.  Please wait to meet your child outside on the blacktop vs entering the school to the hallways.

Please note that staff will be asking parents waiting in the hallways to move outside.

We appreciate your support in keeping our students safe.

Sight and Hearing Tests:

A form was sent home regarding seeing and hearing tests.  Please note that this is an optional program, offered to schools within HDSB.  If you are interested, please complete the form enclosed in the information package and return to your child’s teacher.

Calling all 3 year-olds:  Kindergarten Information Session:

Future students and their families are invited to attend the following Kindergarten Open House, to be held November 14th at Alexander’s Public School (2223 Sutton Dr.) from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

At the Open House, students and parents will:

  • Explore a Kindergarten classroom
  • Learn about play-based learning
