Happy Sunday Clarksdale Families,

Our second last week before the holiday break --- and LOTS going on in the Den!

Holiday Craft Night this week

We are excited for our upcoming holiday multicultural craft and sing-a-long this week:  Thursday 6:30 – 8:00pm.  If you have not sent in your craft registration form, please ensure you do as we are only preparing enough crafts for those who registered.  Please also plan to join us at 7:30pm in the gym for a sing-a-long, hot chocolate and cookie to kick off the holiday season!

Book Fair This Week!

Wow, we are so excited! The Book Fair is finally here!

We will be open on:

Wednesday December 12th from 11:45 - 6:00

Thursday December 13th from 9:30 - 8:00

Friday December 14th from 9:30 - 3:30

Monday December 17th from  9:30 - 1:15

Come on down, buy some books and help support Clarksdale’s library!

Angel Tree and Hat/Mitten Tree:

Thank you to those who have already participated in the hat/mitten tree and the angel tree.  We still have lots of cards available. All donations are due by Friday, so please consider donating a wrapped gift or gift card to this important cause. We are looking to support over 20 families, so we really appreciate all help!  **Please note:  if you know of a family in need, or if you feel you could use a helping hand yourself, please contact me atreesorj@hdsb.ca or call the school.

Pizza and Milk orders available online

Please note that pizza and milk orders for the New Year are available online.

Spirit Leader News:

Everyone looked fabulous on Mustache Day and the Spirit Leaders would like to thank everyone for the donations for the cancer society. We raised $149.00.

Our next event is PJ Day on December 20th .

Early Dismissal next Friday, December 21st

A reminder that we have early dismissal next Friday, December 21st.  School ends at 2:05pm.  Bus times will also be adjusted to arrive home 90 minutes earlier.

Grade 2 French Immersion Registration:

As most should know, French Immersion begins in Grade 2 and requires registration.  If you would like to register your child for grade 2 FI, please do so between December 1st and January 31st.  Late applications will not be accepted.

Winter Weather Reminders:

With the snow, just a few reminders to ensure your children are properly dressed – boots, hats, jackets, mitts and snow pants.

Also, in the event of snowy weather, please make sure to check the website for information regarding bus cancellations and school closures.

Parking Safety Reminders

We are continuing to have parents park along the side of the west parking lot in the emergency route instead of in parking spaces.  On Friday, we also had someone park in between the two, which totally blocked entry/exit.  Please ensure you park in designated parking spaces only, or better yet, walk to school or park a few streets away to enjoy some fresh air at the end of the day. Please help us to keep all of our children safe and to model kindness to each other.

What is Going on in the Den - Nov 26 - 30

posted Nov 25, 2018, 5:07 PM by Neil Hammond

Happy Sunday Clarksdale Families,

It is hard to believe we are almost into December!  And another busy week to come in the Den!

Lots of Ways to share kindness at Clarksdale!

We appreciate all of the opportunities for students and families to Pay It Forward --- we recognize that supporting each one can be difficult--- so please know we are sharing these as options to consider, but there is of course no requirement for students to do all of these!

  1. Mustache Day November 30th!

For this month's Spirit Day, Mustache Day, the Spirit Leaders will be accepting donations for the Cancer Society. They will be accepting donations at the beginning of first nutrition break from Monday November 26 to Thursday November 29th.  We ask that the donation be a minimum of 25 cents.  With each donation, the children will receive one of the hand designed mustaches made by the Spirit Leaders.

  1. Angel Tree and Hat/Mitten Tree:

We invite all families to participate in our third annual angel tree and hat/mitten tree collections.  Many families within our community need help over the holiday season and throughout the year and this is a wonderful way to do so.  Please consider donating a pair of mittens, hat or scarf to our mitten tree, located in the library.  Or come to the office and select a card from our angel tree.  Then, simply purchase a gift, suitable for a child of that age, wrap it and place it with the card attached (including a description of what is in the package) back under the tree. New toys, Lego, craft items, clothing, books etc. are all great suggestions. Gift cards are also welcome (e.g. grocery stores, Chapters, Walmart, Canadian Tire, Toys R Us).  We thank you in advance for your kind support of this important event.  We know that last year, we were able to support close to 25 families – and their appreciation was tremendous.

  1. A Message from the Me2We team:

From November 26th to November 30th, the Me2We team will be selling Rafiki chains. Order forms will be sent home Monday. Rafiki chains are long, beaded chains, that can be used as a bracelet or a necklace, and are made by mothers in Kenya to raise money to send their children to school. To help support them, we are selling the Rafikis for $10 eachWe hope you will help us make a difference around the world."

French Immersion Information Sessions

A reminder that the French Immersion information session is being held on Thursday, December 6th, 6-7 pm at the New Street Education Centre/Gary Allan High School, 3250 New Street.  Please note that individual schools will not be hosting information nights at this time.  Additional information is available on the Halton website at www.hdsb.ca

Deadline for registrations is January 31, 2018.

Clarksdale Holiday Arts Evening – Thursday, December 13th, 6:30-8:00pm

This year Clarksdale students and staff will be hosting a holiday craft evening, celebrating the many cultures and traditions we enjoy at Clarksdale and beyond.  Students of all grades are invited to join us with parents/guardians for an evening of crafts and song.  Registration forms were sent home last week.

Book Fair Coming Soon!

Please come out to support Clarksdale's library! Last year was a huge success and we are hoping for a repeat this year!

On Tuesday, December 11, the book fair will be open for students to come down and make a wish list. The fair will be open for business starting Wednesday, December 12th at 11:45. It will also be open during our Holiday craft night on December 13th. The last day of the fair is Monday December 17th.

Also, our library collection has recently been weeded due to the age of the books and would really appreciate any donations of new books!  Please consider buying an extra book at the fair to donate to our school collection and help refresh our library!

Last call for Lost and Found

Many thanks to those who have visited our Lost and Found table to retrieve missing items.  We still have items left, so if you have not done so, please take a moment to come by.  Any items left unclaimed by November 30th will be donated.

Optional Attendance

We have just received confirmation that Clarksdale is CLOSED to optional attendance for 2019-2020.  If you have a new student who would like to register for optional attendance here for next year, please visit your child’s home school and fill out an optional attendance form.  You can then still submit them to us, for consideration once we see the projected numbers and registrations for the upcoming year.  Please note, optional attendance requests should be made between December 1st and January 31st.

What is Going on in the Den - Nov 19th - 23rd

posted Nov 18, 2018, 9:09 AM by Neil Hammond

Happy Sunday Clarksdale Families,

Many thanks to the parents/family members who joined us for our Movie Night on Friday.  Another great family evening, with all proceeds going to support the Halton Learning Foundation.

A busy week to come in the Den

This week is Bullying Prevention Awareness Week throughout Halton.

At Clarksdale, we continue (as we do each week!) with the promotion of Kindness, Inclusion and Positive Problem Solving in order to help our students feel safe and happy at school – and to feel they belong.  Each day, we will be sharing a special message with students and will be focusing on recognizing the random acts of kindness that students, staff and parents do for each other every day.

Clarksdale’s Angel Tree and Hat/Mitten Tree Begins this week

Clarksdale is a very generous school community and we are so appreciative of the kindness we share.  We have many families in need within our community and each year, we invite all staff, students and parents to take part in our Angel Tree and Holiday Hat/mitten Tree.  Bring in a pair of mittens, a hat or scarf and hang them on the mitten tree, located in the library.

Our Angel Tree will be located in the office.  The tree contains paper ornaments that indicate a child (e.g., boy 8, girl 9), mom/dad/guardian.  Come on in, take a card and purchase a gift suitable for the person on the ornament.  New this year:  please wrap the gift and bring it to the school with the ornament card taped to it including a description of the gift inside.  Our Clarksdale elves will then assemble the gifts and distribute them to our families before the holiday season begins.

We also welcome gift cards.  Popular spots include grocery stores, Walmart, Chapters/Indigo, The Bay, Canadian Tire, Toys R Us, Mall cards or gas stations.

We always appreciate donations of tape, wrapping paper, cards and bows for any last minute items needed.

We look forward to sharing the kindness of the season with all of our Clarksdale families.  All donations are due in the office by Friday December 7th

More details will follow shortly but we wanted to share this “hold the date” message with you.

Progress Reports Home this week and Student/Teacher/Parent Conferences this week

Parents are reminded that progress reports are being sent home on Monday and that their student/parent/teacher conference will be held this week.  Please note that students are expected to accompany you to these meetings, unless otherwise arranged with your child’s teacher. Progress reports will be sent home on Monday, so please take a moment to review these with your child prior to your conference.

Happy Sunday Clarksdale Families,

Many thanks to the parents/family members who joined us for our Remembrance Day Ceremony.  It was a beautiful assembly, and we thank our grade 6 leaders, as well as all the classes who presented and created wreaths of remembrance.

Goodbye and Hello

We wanted to thank Mrs. Sinclair for her support as General Secretary and wish her well in her new position at Garth Webb S.S..  We would like to welcome Ms Buonomo, who will be joining us starting Monday in the afternoons.  We are delighted to have Ms. B. join our team and please take a moment to introduce yourself when you are in the office.

A busy week to come in the Den

Lockdown Practice this week

Each year, as part of our Safety Plan, all elementary schools conduct two lockdown practices. These planned practices are important in ensuring that staff and students are aware of how to appropriately respond in the event of a real emergency.  Our first lockdown practice will take place on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at approximately 10:30 a.m.  Our Community Police Officer, Constable M. Repta, will be joining us.   The practice will last approximately 15 minutes; however, it is important to note that during this time, access to the school will not be permitted.  Please plan ahead for this as it may affect pick-ups for appointments etc.

Please refer to the separate message sent by Mrs. Rhodes-Foley for more details.

Our Next Movie Night of the Year is This Friday!

Our next movie, “Wreck It Ralph” is this Friday.  Doors open at 6:30 and there will be snacks and drinks available for purchase.  Admission is $1.  Bring your favourite blanket and jammies and join us for a fun family evening!  A reminder that all students must be accompanied by an adult. All proceeds from this movie night will be directed to the Halton Learning Foundation, so we invite you to make an additional donation to support this important cause that helps our students directly.

It’s Recorder Time

Student in grade 5 and 6 are encouraged to purchase their own replacement recorders if they have lost them.  White Soprano Recorders are available at Long and McQuade for $4.99 or can be purchased from the music teacher.  Class recorders are available for use, but it is preferable for each student to have their own to allow for practice. Please do not purchase recorders from the dollar stores as they are tuned differently.

Progress Reports and Conferences are next week

Progress reports will be sent home with students on Monday, November 19th. Many of you signed up for your child’s conference/interview while at the Open House in September.  If you have not yet signed up, please contact your child’s teacher to select a time that works for you.

French Immersion Information Sessions

In the Halton District School Board, the entry point for the French Immersion program is Grade 2.  In the Grade 2 French Immersion program, 100% of the instructional day will be taught in French.

A series of community information evenings are scheduled to help address any questions parents/guardians may have before registering their Grade 1 child(ren) for the French Immersion program. The Burlington session will be held on Thursday, December 6th, from 6-7pm at New Street Education Centre, 3250 New Street (Brock Room).  Registration for the French Immersion program will begin on Friday, Dec. 7, 2018.   The deadline for submitting your registration form is Thursday, January 31, 2019 at 4 p.m. No registrations will be accepted after this date.

What is going on in the Den - Nov 5 - 9

posted Nov 4, 2018, 1:23 PM by Neil Hammond

Happy Sunday Clarksdale Families,

We are already into November and our children are busy and active in their learning both inside and outside the classroom.

Here is What’s Happening in the Den this Week:

Our November newsletter was sent home last week, so please take a look for it either in your child’s backpack or online.

Intramurals start this week!

Monday/Tuesday - grade 3 and 4 teams

Wednesday/Thursday - grade 1 and 2 teams

Team schedules have been distributed to classes!

Library club starts on Monday,

Second half of second break. Come out to help shelve a book or two and then relax with a good book or discuss your favourite books with friends!

Photo Retake Day Thursday

Photos from our first photo day were sent home last week.  If you would like a retake or if your child was absent on our first day, please send a note to your child’s teacher and we will ensure that it gets taken.

Remembrance Day Ceremony on Friday

We invite all students to join us in wearing red to honour our veterans for our Remembrance Day Ceremony this Friday at 10:15.  Parents are also welcome to join us as we acknowledge the contributions of our many veterans and current members of our military.

Lockdown Practice – November 14th

Each year, as part of our Safety Plan, all elementary schools conduct two lockdown practices.  These planned practices are important in ensuring that staff and students are aware of how to appropriately respond in the event of a real emergency.  Our first lockdown practice will take place on Wednesday, November 14th, 2018 at approximately 10:30 a.m.

Progress Reports Coming home soon -Conference sign-ups

Progress Reports are coming home on November 19th and conferences will be held that week. If you have not yet signed up, please contact your child’s teacher to select a time that works for you.  A reminder notice of your date and time will be sent home soon.

Pick Up and Drop-off Reminders

We want to remind parents/guardians that when coming into the school, all adults must sign in at the office.  On rainy days, when students enter the school directly, we ask that parents say your good-byes on the blacktop.

Please do not walk your child to his/her classroom.  This helps reduce congestion in the hallways and safety concerns for our staff and students.

We ask the same at the end of the day.  Please wait to meet your child outside on the blacktop vs entering the school to the hallways.

Please note that staff will be asking parents waiting in the hallways to move outside.  We appreciate your support in keeping our students safe.

Amazing Gift from Halton Learning Foundation

On Thursday evening, I attended the Halton Learning Foundation annual fundraiser and it was a very heartwarming and inspiring evening with stories shared by students of the impact this support has had on their lives.
At the end of the evening, prizes were drawn for schools who had supported the HLF last year and Clarksdale was a winner!
We won a multitude of beautiful books, in both English and French, Indigenous and multicultural —- in total about 6 boxes, which I would estimate is worth at least $3000!  Just amazing!!!  Given the hard work that we are doing to re-build our library resources, this couldn’t have come at a better time.
It also reinforces the kindness that HLF displays each day to students right here in the Halton District School Board.

As we begin to think about the holiday season, I would invite you to consider a donation to the Halton Learning Foundation. www.haltonlearningfoundation.ca

Sight and Hearing Tests:

A form was sent home regarding seeing and hearing tests.  Please note that this is an optional program, offered to schools within HDSB.  If you are interested, please complete the form enclosed in the information package and return to your child’s teacher.

Calling all 3 year-olds:  Kindergarten Information Session:

Future students and their families are invited to attend the following Kindergarten Open House, to be held November 8th at Alexander’s Public School (2223 Sutton Dr.) from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

At the Open House, students and parents will:

  • Explore a Kindergarten classroom
  • Learn about play-based learning
  • Pick up information and resource material in a free backpack
  • Access information about community agencies and resources in Halton
  • Get information about before and after school care
  • Connect with special education staff to discuss any developmental concerns

Registration for Kindergarten begins in January 2019 and takes place at the school your child will attend. Children born in 2015 can start Kindergarten in September 2019.

A great time was had by all of Friday!  We had a fabulous turnout and lots of costumes with both adults and children.  So fun!  A HUGE thank you to our organizing team for their hard work in decorating and volunteering to run all of the activities.  Many thanks also for the large number of contributions to our We Scare Hunger campaign.  Our Me to We club will be organizing them for donation this week.

Staffing Update:

We wanted to let families know that Ms. Konopka will be away on a temporary leave.  While Ms. Konopka is away, Mrs. Toal will be joining us as our Music Teacher.  We welcome Mrs. Toal to Clarksdale and we invite you to take a moment to introduce yourself!

Halloween/Spirit Parade Wednesday

We will be hosting our Halloween Parade on Wednesday, following announcements, at around 9:30am.  Parents/Guardians are welcome to come and join us.  Please sign in at the office and then join us in the main hallway.  Students will make their way around the school, so you will have the chance to see all the great costumes, orange and black or Clarksdale spiritwear.

Please send a change of clothes for your young child as they will be changing out of their costumes.  We want to make sure they make it to Halloween Night!

Halloween Reminders::

  1. please ensure your child’s costume does not create fear in others.  We are a kindergarten – grade 6 school, so please make sure you consider the age of all of our students when choosing your costume. Please avoid any costume that portrays a frightening image or inappropriate character or any stereotypes that would be offensive.
  2. For safety reasons, no masks are permitted and make-up can be fun and colourful, but should not depict scary images
  3. Please ensure that no toy weapons (i.e swords, toy guns, sabres etc) are brought to school

Lastly, a reminder that, due to allergies, we ask that you do not send in candy or food for Halloween.  Also, please be diligent in treats you may include in your child’s lunch after Halloween, to ensure they continue to be nut free.  We do have many children and staff with life threatening allergies and we want to ensure everyone is safe.

We look forward to a fun celebration and a safe and happy Halloween.

Intramurals are Starting:

Intramurals will begin the first week of November! Grade 3 and 4 students will be playing ball hockey on Monday or Tuesday at second break. Grade 1 and 2 students will be playing polo broom ball on Wednesday or Thursday, also at second break. Sign up sheets have been delivered to each class for teams to be created.

Reminder to our Kindie Parents:

As our little ones are beginning now to develop their independence and are settling into their morning routines, we remind parents to say their goodbyes before the gate in order to minimize the numbers of adults in the kindie area during a busy time of day.  You are welcome to watch at the fence and give a wave, but we appreciate you remaining in that area. Thanks for your help as we encourage our children to “grow and succeed”.

Reminder to all parents/guardians:

If you come to the school to pick up your child or to drop off something for them, please ensure you sign in at the office and we will call the child down or deliver the item to them.  Even at recess time, we request that you follow this routine vs going on the blacktop or into the classroom.  Safety for all is our first priority and we appreciate your cooperation in this regard.

What's Going On In The Den -- Week of October 15th

Happy Sunday Clarksdale Families,

We hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful weekend with friends and family.

This week brings many activities, as we continue our learning together

Way to go Clarksdale! We have sent 1162 dried out markers from the 2017-2018 school year to Crayola for recycling.

This school year we will be continuing the colour cycle to make sure our markers stay out of the landfill. Go green Clarksdale! Special thanks to Ms. Kozsurek for leading this great initiative!

Civic Election

The grade 4, 5 & 6 students will be taking part in Student Votes this Friday October 19th where they will be able vote for the Mayor, Councillors and School Board Representative. The Grade 5s will act as poll clerks and the students vote using actual votes provided by Elections Ontario. The school results will be announced during the election coverage on TV and Radio Monday night.

There will an assembly this week explaining why the adults are voting next Monday October 22nd and who is running in our ward.

Kids4Kids begins this Thursday after school. Students who are participating will join Scott Graham in the library from 3:35-5:00 for great team building, self-confidence strategies and fun with friends!  Spots are still available.  If you would like to register, please drop by the office and pick up a form.

CCAT Testing for Grade 4s is this week.  All Grade 4 students will be participating in the Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test (CCAT) this week.  Participating classes have received a letter outlining the details, so please take a moment to read further.

Indigo Adopt-A-School a Huge Success

A tremendous thank you to everyone who supported our library with the Indigo adopt-a-school program! Although I won’t have the grand total until the end of the month, I can tell you that it is over $4000!!! We are so excited to go on a shopping spree and I know our students can’t wait to see the brand new books on our shelves!

Also, in a “random act of kindness”, we had a delivery today of over 300 new books.  This individual is not affiliated with Clarksdale, but was in Indigo, saw the need, and proceeded to collect new books from her colleagues and family.  She delivered them today with a note that will be shared with students next week.  What an awesome moment!

Clarksdale Pays It Forward

This week, the Me2We club had its first meeting. Many students showed up and were excited to get started on our month's initiative - We Scare Hunger. More information to follow next week. Grade 4-6 students are welcome to come forward to be Team Leads this year and a form was sent home to fill out if desired. Our next meeting will be Tuesday October 16th! See you there!

Darksdale is coming soon!

Please plan on joining us for our annual Darksdale celebration on Friday, October 26th.  Great family fun and games  --- come on out to Hogwarts and enjoy all the Harry Potter fun!  Watch for details coming this week!  Volunteers always welcome!

Free community presentation “Relationships Matter” by Mary Tabak from @OurKidsNetwork  hosted by CAPP for Kids Tuesday Oct 23rd 7 pm at Gary Allan High School.  Relationships with kids play an important role in academic success, bullying prevention, positive mental health and well-being, youth engagement, social emotional learning and many other risk factors.

The good news is that we can all form strong relationships, but for many of us, it happens by accident. Mary will present, share tips and tell stories about 5 important and easy things you can do to develop more meaningful relationships with your kids today. From babies to teenagers, it is never too early or too late to build relationships.

Interview sign-ups

Many of you signed up for your child’s conference/interview while at the Open House last week.  If you have not yet signed up, please contact your child’s teacher to select a time that works for you.

Breakfast Club Reminder

Breakfast Club continues 8:40 in the gym.  All students are welcome to join us for a healthy breakfast to start their day.  Please remind students to bring a water bottle as we continue to be eco-friendly. Bus students are welcome to partake as “Grab ‘n Go” as they arrive; however, we are having challenges with garbage being left on the blacktop in the mornings.  Please remind your children to help us take care of our school by putting their garbage in the appropriate bins.
