What is going on in the Den - June 18th

posted Jun 18, 2018, 7:42 PM by Neil Hammond

Good Afternoon Clarksdale Families,

Hope everyone enjoyed a fantastic weekend and a Happy Fathers’ Day to all of our Clarksdale Dads!

Only 2 weeks left in our school year!  Hard to believe we are so close to the end, but still lots happening in the Den.

Bee Stand Continues

Due to popular demand, our “Bee-autiful” bee stand sold out quickly on Friday so will continue this week.  Our students in Class 3/4-1 FI and 4-1 FI are buzzing to make additional bracelets and magnets to drive awareness of the importance of bees to our ecosystem.  Proceeds from the sale of these items will be going to “The Humble Bee” in Hamilton, whose work supports the preservation and protection of our bee population.

Volunteer Tea on Friday

A reminder that our volunteer tea is scheduled for this Friday, June 22nd at 10:45. Please join us in the library for some treats and coffee/tea.  We would love to be able to take this time to thank you for all of your hard work in supporting our staff and students.  If you plan on attending, please return the form or contact the office.

Staff Appreciation Luncheon date has been changed

The staff appreciation luncheon date has been changed to Monday, June 25th.  The team will be sending out an invitation for donations of food, gift cards and/or volunteers.  A lovely way to show our appreciation for our awesome staff.  Many thanks to all for helping out!

Running Club final week

Please remember to bring a water bottle, as it is already hot at 8:15am!

Breakfast Club final week

The Breakfast Club resumes this week, 8:45 in the gym.  This will be our final breakfast club for the year.

Every Friday morning this year, our students have been enjoying healthy breakfast options, prepared by our Breakfast club team.  This dedicated team comes every Thursday to prepare and then each Friday to provide this service for our students.  Over 100 students enjoy it each week, and many others enjoy the items as snacks later in the day.  In doing this each week, we are helping to ensure our students start the day on a healthy and positive note, which has also been proven to help their learning.  So a tremendous appreciation to our Breakfast Club Volunteers and to Halton Food For Thought for making this possible for our students.

Final Spirit Day

Join us this Friday for our final Spirit Day:  Beach Day!  Wear tropical colours, sunglasses and hats (no bathing suits please!).  Perfect for our Year end Wolfpack play day, which will take place period 5 and 6!

End of Year Reminders:

Please remember to return all library books.  Also, please ask your child to bring home clothing and other personal items asap, so that they are not loaded down on the last day of school!

JK Registration:

PLEASE come in to register if you have not already done so.  We have heard that there are young brothers or sisters out there who have not yet done so!  We are building the classes now so please come in asap to register.

Important Construction Notice

Clarksdale will be undergoing some renovations/construction over the summer.  In order to get the work underway as quickly as possible, the construction is set to begin the week of July 9th. This means that the school will not be accessible until August 19th.  We ask that students take all of their belongings home before the end of the year. We also ask that if you are registering your child for next year, please make sure to do so this week as the school will not be open after July 6th.

Mental Health Awareness Week

This week across Canada is Mental Health Awareness Week.  Every day this week we will be playing a song in the morning to raise awareness about Mental Health, we will have daily announcements, and students will complete activities in their classrooms.

One in five Canadians lives with mental health problems, mental illnesses or addiction. But all of us have mental health, just like we all have physical health. Our focus this year will be “Bounce Back”! Bounce Back means being resilient and getting back on your feet after a tough time.

On Saturday, Clarksdale families who have pre-registered will meet at Spencer Smith Park for the Team Unbreakable Run/Walk for Youth Mental Health.

Fun Fair News:

As part of our fun fair, classes are invited to gather items to create baskets that are then part of our penny sale.  Each class has chosen a theme and will be sharing that theme with you. Families are then invited to send in new/unused items to help fill the class basket.

Our next planning meeting is Thursday, May 10th at 7:15 pm in the staff room.  See you there!

Clarksdale GSA

Students in Grades 4-6 who are interested in joining the Clarksdale GSA are invited to meet Ms. Lukawecky and Mme Clarke in the library at 2nd nutrition break on Mondays starting this week.

Jump Rope for Heart

Clarksdale will be participating in Heart and Stroke's 2018 Jump Rope for Heart.  This year Jump Rope for Heart is striving to get 1 million students jumping in close to 4000 schools across Canada.  We are excited to be a part of it!   Envelopes were sent home this week --- we encourage students to try the online fundraising option as a quick and safe option!  Our skipping event will be on Friday May 18th.

Many thanks:

Thank you to all families who contributed to our Library Refreshment Fund during our Musical.  We collected $1170 which will be used to purchase new resources for our library!  See below for another opportunity to support our library!

SK Photo Day

Reminder that our SK’s will be having their photos taken this Tuesday May 1st

POWER OFF AND PLAY!

Last week, your child was given a "Family Screen Time Contract" to bring home in their bag.  If you would like to participate, please fill in the contract and carry it out this week (April 30th-May 4th)

Return the contract by May 8th and be eligible to win fabulous prizes, including:

-Family Membership to the Royal Botanical Gardens

-Halton Parks Family Membership

-Bronte Creek Annual Pass

-Burlington Recreation Gift Cards (used for City Swim Pass, towards summer camps, etc.)

-Chapters/Indigo Gift Cards

-Family Croquet Set

-Volleyball/Badminton Set

Thank you for your interest and we sincerely hope that this challenge will allow for more power off and play as a family:)

Movie Night Friday – “May the 4th be with you”

In honour of May 4th, we will be showing Rogue One – A Star Wars Story at our next movie night.

In lieu of $1 admission, we will once again be collecting donations in support of our library refreshment fund.  Many thanks to School Council for dedicating the proceeds from this event to our library.

Doors open at 6:30pm and the movie begins at 7:00pm.

As a reminder, students must be accompanied by an adult.

Looking forward to seeing all of our jedi’s there!

Jump Rope for Heart

Clarksdale will be participating in Heart and Stroke's 2018 Jump Rope for Heart.  This year Jump Rope for Heart is striving to get 1 million students jumping in close to 4000 schools across Canada.  We are excited to be a part of it! Our kick-off assembly is this Thursday at 9:45 am.  Students from Clarksdale's skipping club will launch the assembly and students will receive pledge envelopes to begin fundraising.  Our skipping event will be on Friday May 18th.

Fun Fair News:

Fun Fair is fast approaching and we are in need of volunteers to help!  Forms went home last week, so please take a moment to fill it out and let us know how you can help --- just taking one shift at a booth, helping with prizes, games, food preparation etc. would be appreciated.

Our next planning meeting is Thursday, May 10th at 7:15 pm in the staff room.  See you there!

Class Placement Requests – final reminder

Each year, our staff spend a great deal of time building classes and consider the learning and social needs of all students.  That said, if you have a specific request regarding your child’s placement, please send it to Mrs. Reesor in writing, no later than April 30th.  As a reminder, please do not include requests for specific teachers.  As you can appreciate, teacher assignments do change from year to year and we therefore cannot accommodate such requests. We will consider parent requests when creating classes; however, the final decision regarding placement does remain with the school.
